Microscope Lighting Introduction
Good lighting for a microscope is critical to make all relevant details of the sample visible. This is achieved by offering microscope lighting options that are varied and offer different characteristics that will influence the analysis of the samples’ surface topography.
For non-transparent samples, reflected or incident light is used. Typical options will include Fiber Optic Light Guides, Ring Lights and Line Lights.
For transparent samples, transmitted light is used to illuminate the sample. Typical options will include Back Light.
Cold Light Source
Fiber optic illumination offers easy compatibility with all stereo microscopes due to their wide range of light guides and accessories. They are referred to as cold light source as the light is guided to the sample via optical fiber, so heat develops only at the light source and no heat is emitted on the sample itself.
Compared to direct light sources fiber optic light sources provide significantly higher intensity. This is particularly important when working with magnifications of 30X and higher.
Direct Light Source
In direct lighting solutions the lighting in the form of single LED’s is located directly in the lighting head. As the LED’s can each be controlled independently this can provide more lighting control including segmenting the ring light illumination in different ways to provide better contrast on the sample by using shadow effects.
